IAT integrates engineering, safety, testing, compliance and specialist expertise to support companies and organisations in managing complex assets, plants and processes.
Our story
IAT — Istituto Nazionale Applicazioni Tecnologiche (National Institute of Applied Technology) — was founded in Rome in 1983: an independent technical organisation dedicated to bringing measurement, testing and design methods from laboratories to companies. In 1985 IAT obtained recognition as Qualified laboratory no. 343, published in the Italian Official Gazette (G.U.R.I.) no. 249/1985.
From radiation protection and non-destructive testing, the Institute's historic activities, competencies expanded over the years to occupational safety, fire prevention, civil, plant and electrical engineering, environment and training, through to applied research on hydrogen, measurement systems and food technology.
Today IAT is an engineering and technical consulting company based in Rome, working throughout Italy and, for specific contracts, abroad.
What we do
One counterpart to assess, design, verify and keep complex systems under control.
IAT's nine competence areas — engineering, health & safety, fire safety, radiation protection, inspection & testing, environment & energy, quality & food safety, training, research & innovation — are not separate departments. They work together on the same plant: those measuring worker exposure know the plant a colleague designed; those designing the fire strategy know which radioactive sources are present.
Compliance is not the finish line. It is part of the design.
How we work
Independence
We assess, design and verify without selling third-party plants, products or technologies. Our interest coincides with the client's: a correct technical solution.
Technical rigour
We measure before deciding. Every assessment rests on surveys, tests and verifiable data, using our own instrumentation.
Multidisciplinary approach
Engineers, radiation-protection experts, prevention technicians, competent acoustics technicians and NDT specialists work on the same problem.
Practical delivery
Documents, designs and reports built to be used: by the employer, the technical director, the inspecting authority.

“Dare to know.” The motto IAT chose from the start sums up its method: understand before intervening, measure before deciding, never accept a solution just because it is the usual one.
